Just at sunset, a heron flits along the lakeside, its stilted legs folded up and trailing behind it, and settles down on a big boulder.
For the longest time, it stands stock still, keeping close watch of the forest surrounding the lake. It even turns its back on possible fishing, watching, waiting. Entire minutes pass…

Au crépuscule, un héron vole sur le lac, ses pattes gracieusement allongées derrière son corps, avant de se poser sur un rocher.
Immobile pendant un temps très long, il surveille la forêt qui borde le lac. Tournant le dos à l’eau, il scrute le bois et tout ce qu’il contient… il attend. Des minutes entières passent...
Observez-le, chuchote les grandes herbes. Il se concentre avant de chasser mais nous ne savons pas quelle sera sa proie. Les minutes sont infinies…

How rarely are we given to simply observing everything around us. A whole world of opportunity waits for us if we pause a moment to see it, to take it all in first.
Yet the heron goes one better. It raises its foot and stands there, poised on just one leg, for another long passage of time. Then, suddenly, it darts to another boulder and surprises us by changing its vantage point. No, it does not start to hunt. It has clearly made its choice, though: it will be fish tonight.
Another interminable wait is in store for us, since the heron seemingly does nothing except to guard the lake. It is waiting for dusk, we think, but that is interpreting the heron’s intentions.
Decidedly, we are getting our lesson’s worth in watching. The heron takes up its post long before it actually seizes the opportunity to begin to hunt. Its attitude is steadfast, as it knows it is in the right place, though the time may not be ready.
Like the heron, we need to anticipate before we hunt. To be good hunters, we require patience, the right strategy and keen sight.
The fish are there to be taken, just beyond what we can see if we look too quickly.

Il est rare que nous observions avec autant d’attention ce qui attire notre œil. Tout un monde d’opportunités nous attend… si seulement nous prenions un temps d’arrêt pour regarder avec attention.
Le héron n’en reste pas là. Il lève une patte et reste en équilibre tel un yogi sur une seule jambe. Le temps s’écoule encore. Puis, soudain, il saute sur un autre rocher et nous surprend quand il change totalement de perspective il dresse sa tête et tourne son bec vers l’eau. II ne commence pas encore à chasser mais il a clairement choisi un poisson ce soir pour son diner.
Encore une attente interminable, le héron ne fait rien si ce n’est étudier la surface du lac. Il connaît son affaire.
Décidément, la conduite du héron est instructive. Il reste longtemps en position avant de faire un choix et de s’envoler vers une proie. Son attitude est résolue. Il sait qu’il est à la bonne place même si le moment n’est pas encore là.
Comme le héron, nous avons besoin d’anticiper avant de commencer à chasser. Pour bien réussir il faut de la patience, de la persévérance, une bonne stratégie et une vue sans faille.
Les poissons sont là, difficiles à saisir d’où nous sommes, surtout si nous jetons un coup d’œil trop rapide.
